Personally, I don't think anything is completely hacker-proof, just as money isn't completely counterfeit-proof.
I've lost count on how many times i've rebuilt my computer(s). Back in my amateur days when didn't know crap, if a problem came up which was relativly hard to fix i'd just format. Pretty dumb I know. I got to many important things on my comp. to go through that. But if you don't have to many things to worry abuot format and keeping back up's is a good solution for a cluttered machine. Just make sure if you backup those files from your machine now they don't contain viruses that will transfer when u place it in your new clean formatted machine.
Now I use Ghost over my network to reimage my PC's. At my old job I had to setup 10 separate Ghost images and deploy them over the wire. Could do a 3 Gb image on 10 computers at the same time in about 20 minutes. It may sound good, but I had to do the individual config on each machine and it was a pain. I did though try a deployment solution called Alteris. This program could image a hard drive, install individual settings, and install individual software all from a console screen. Unfortualty, it costs an arm and leg to get so it was cheaper just to use Ghost.
BTW Ask all the questions you want, us computer geeks will be happy to answer them.
